Trump Establishes 'AI Force,' Names Czar as Regulation Push Grows

President Donald Trump announced Saturday his plan to establish an "AI Force" modeled after the Space Force he created in 2019, and to appoint an "AI czar" to oversee the technology's rapid development. He made the announcement on Truth Social.

Trump said he would name the czar "in the near future," stipulating that "Only High I.Q. individuals need apply." The new czar will lead the administration's efforts in artificial intelligence.

The president said the United States must outpace China and other nations in AI development. "We are leading China, and the rest of the World, and I intend to keep it that way," he wrote.

Trump said his administration would "not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry." But he acknowledged potential risks, saying the government would "be looking for BAD, and we can do that, very easily, with our already existing Criminal and Civil Justice System."

The Space Force was the first new U.S. military service established since 1947.

Trump has frequently downplayed AI risks, previously calling concerns a "SICK conspiracy" and a "hoax."

The president's move comes as the White House and Congress face pressure to impose safeguards on AI technology. Public concern has grown over AI's potential to eliminate jobs and the impact of AI data centers on communities. Trump has called such data centers "the golden goose," citing their role in driving stock market gains and boosting manufacturing.

Democrats have pushed for slower AI development. Former President Barack Obama on Friday urged potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidates to prioritize AI regulation. "My view this week has been it is good that some of the leading companies have said we need to slow this down, and we should encourage that," Obama said during a fireside chat at Colgate University. "Government has to be regulating this."

Venture capitalist David Sacks served as Trump's AI and cryptocurrency czar until March, when he reached his term limit as a special government employee. Sacks now chairs the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
