Meta's Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses are creating an unexpected secondary market: apps designed to detect them.

The second-generation Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta HSTN models pack 3K video cameras, 12-megapixel still-image sensors, built-in AI assistants, and audio speakers into frames that look nearly identical to ordinary eyewear. The cameras sit in the upper corners of the frames where hinges are concealed, making them visually indistinguishable from standard designs across multiple lens colors and frame styles.

The result is a privacy problem with no obvious technical solution. Users can secretly capture photos and video without consent, and targets have limited practical recourse. The camera lenses—small circular black shapes with glossy centers, only millimeters in diameter—are easier to spot on light frames but disappear into black, brown, or gray designs.

The gap has attracted entrepreneurs. A Polish developer launched ZuckOff, an iPhone app that detects nearby Meta glasses by reading Wi-Fi signal strength. It offers rough proximity data but cannot determine if a device is actively recording or identify the wearer. Other detection methods remain crude: watching for unusually bulky frames, flat spots, or texture irregularities, or monitoring for suspicious movements and audio cues.

Meta has not announced formal detection countermeasures or privacy controls specific to the glasses themselves. The company has focused instead on positioning the devices as productivity tools—hands-free access to AI information and quick photo capture without retrieving a phone.

The emergence of detection apps signals a broader tension: consumer hardware makers are shipping connected devices with minimal built-in signals to indicate recording status, forcing users to rely on third-party detection tools or visual inspection. For privacy-conscious consumers and venues concerned about unauthorized recording, the responsibility has shifted entirely to detection rather than prevention.
