LISDOONVARNA, Ireland — Mary Timby, a 39-year-old from Colorado, found love at the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival in County Clare after a spontaneous trip last summer. She met Jason Mangan at a pub called The Matchmaker during the month-long event.
Timby booked the trip on impulse, exhausted by dating apps and facing a career transition. She had seen the festival mentioned in a comedy series, discovered it was real and coincided with her planned September travel dates.
Before her flight, Timby posted a short video to her approximately 300 TikTok followers announcing her journey. During the eight-hour flight to Shannon Airport, the video went viral. Friends alerted her to its attention upon landing.
After driving through County Clare to her accommodation, Timby experienced the festival as a town-wide, month-long celebration of conversation and dancing. The event differs from its origins 170 years ago, when matchmakers formally paired individuals.
The festival began when bachelor farmers and wealthy visitors flocked to Lisdoonvarna for its mineral-rich waters and socializing. Generations of matchmakers facilitated marriages, building the festival's reputation. The town's year-round population is fewer than 1,000, but it draws 80,000 visitors globally each September.
Third-generation matchmaker Willie Daly continues to participate. The event maintains its focus on social interaction, though its structure has evolved from its historical roots.
More than a year after her trip, Timby and Mangan are living together in a coastal cottage in County Clare, about 20 miles southwest of Lisdoonvarna. Timby said the experience is "really about enjoying County Clare, enjoying the festival, and, if you meet someone, you do — and that's what happened with us."
Timby has started a business bringing other individuals to Lisdoonvarna seeking similar connections. Local residents, including representatives of Irish cafes, tourist destinations and a Gaelic sports club, approached the communications consultant about becoming an ambassador for the festival. She accepted the role.
