Volkswagen AG slashed its 2026 profit outlook to an operating margin of no more than 1 percent, down from a prior forecast of at least 4 percent. The company reported total charges of approximately €10 billion ($11.5 billion) this year, including €6 billion in Porsche writedowns and restructuring costs tied to workforce reductions and Chinese asset impairments.

Shares fell more than 7 percent on the announcement. Excluding exceptional charges, Volkswagen said its operating margin would reach around 4 percent—a signal that the core business deterioration is material.

China represents the company's steepest headwind. The market contracted approximately 20 percent, and CFO Arno Antlitz said no stabilization is in sight. Chinese automakers are simultaneously capturing domestic share and expanding into Europe with competitively priced electric vehicles that pressure established manufacturers on both volume and pricing.

Europe's faster-than-expected shift to battery-powered vehicles compounds the pressure. Volkswagen reported that growing EV sales are weighing on profitability in its Volkswagen passenger-car and Audi divisions. Battery-powered vehicles generate lower margins than comparable combustion-engine models, compressing overall financial performance.

Vehicle margins face simultaneous compression on two fronts: pricing pressure from Chinese EV competition and internal product-mix shifts toward lower-margin battery powertrains. This dual squeeze leaves limited room for recovery.

VW recently finalized a labor agreement that could expand planned job cuts to 100,000 globally. Management is also addressing excess manufacturing capacity in German facilities—a structural adjustment reflecting revised market realities rather than cyclical cost control.

The vulnerability is asymmetric. Two historical profit drivers—strong Chinese earnings and premium-brand profits—are weakening at once. While some competitors like BMW have shown more resilience in China or faster cost execution, Volkswagen's specific exposure to this confluence is acute.
