Kevin O'Leary is buying new cryptocurrency positions for the upcoming market cycle, stating he is "back in the saddle buying new positions, putting my bets on for this next cycle." The O'Leary Ventures chairman made these comments at the Avalanche Summit in New York, outlining an investment strategy focused on identifying which blockchain network becomes the infrastructure standard for institutional finance.
O'Leary's approach prioritizes determining which underlying network gains widespread institutional use, rather than selecting individual crypto assets. He considers the first major stock exchange to adopt blockchain infrastructure a critical inflection point—such a move would incentivize companies and financial institutions interacting with that exchange to use the same technical and compliance standards, driving adoption of a particular blockchain network.
Conversations with chief executives across sectors have not yet produced consensus on a preferred blockchain. "None of the executives are saying the same thing" regarding the networks their companies are evaluating, O'Leary noted.
Traditional exchanges are already integrating blockchain technology. The New York Stock Exchange has been developing on-chain settlement infrastructure for tokenized securities. NYSE President Lynn Martin confirmed in August that work continued on a dedicated digital trading platform. Intercontinental Exchange, NYSE's parent company, invested in tZERO and licensed its blockchain patents to build tokenized securities infrastructure supporting round-the-clock trading and immediate blockchain settlement. The platform requires specific regulatory approvals before launch.
Nasdaq pursued a different strategy, investing $100 million in Kraken parent Payward in September, valuing the company at $21 billion. Nasdaq and Payward expect to launch Nasdaq Equity Tokens in the second quarter of 2027 as part of their collaboration on tokenized equities and settlement solutions.
Regulatory clarity is accelerating the shift. The Securities and Exchange Commission recently granted five years of conditional relief to tokenized securities venues, permitting trading of eligible tokenized U.S. stocks through permissioned automated market makers and liquidity pools. Eligible tokens must provide holders the same rights and privileges as conventional shares. This regulatory framework supports the development of blockchain-based financial markets—a key factor in O'Leary's investment thesis.
