Decentralized exchanges captured 24.14 percent of total spot trading volume in July 2026, marking a record high in the ratio of DEX to CEX activity since market tracking began in 2019.
The DEX-to-CEX spot ratio has climbed consistently from under 10 percent through much of 2024, reaching 18 to 21 percent during the first half of 2026.
The rise reflects a structural shift toward permissionless trading venues for assets like memecoins and newly issued tokens—categories often unavailable or restricted on major centralized exchanges. Regulatory pressures have also accelerated the migration to on-chain venues.
Absolute DEX spot volume declined month-over-month in July, dropping 26 percent to approximately $130.8 billion. The metric shows that while DEX market share continues expanding, broader trading activity contracted.
Historically, the DEX-to-CEX ratio was far more volatile. It peaked at 14.6 percent in early 2022, collapsed to 5.4 percent by September 2022, and remained suppressed until late 2024.
