LONDON — London remains the most expensive city for renters in the United Kingdom, according to new data from the Office for National Statistics.
The ONS compiled a list of the top 10 most expensive locations to rent across the country. Central London districts such as Kensington, Chelsea, and Westminster lead on cost. The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is the most expensive area, with average monthly rent for a single person reaching around £3,249. Student accommodation in the capital typically costs more than £2,000 per month.
The UK rental market contracted during the COVID-19 pandemic but has rebounded sharply. The Bank of England's recent interest rate increases, aimed at controlling inflation, have contributed to higher rental charges and the overall cost of living.
Bristol ranks as the second most expensive city. The southwestern hub's living expenses are approximately 10 percent higher than Manchester. The city hosts the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England, and serves as a commercial center with roots as a major port dating to the Middle Ages.
Other cities including Cambridge and Oxford feature prominently in house price indices outside the capital. London, however, remains the most expensive place across the entire United Kingdom for both renting and purchasing property.
