Snap will release its new Specs augmented reality glasses this fall, priced at $2,195. The device runs a bespoke operating system and requires no connected smartphone—a deliberate pivot toward commercial venues like art museums, theme parks and pop-up events rather than mass-market consumers.
Snap CEO Evan Spiegel outlined the strategy at the Augmented World Expo in Long Beach on Tuesday. "For the first time in a wearable pair of glasses, computing's leaving these little rectangles [phones], and it's going to be in the world with you," he said.
The move positions Snap as the only major player in this price range operating independently of mobile. Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses function as phone accessories with limited onboard processing. Apple Vision Pro and Samsung Galaxy XR are spatial computers—higher-end, tethered experiences. Google and Meta's other AR glasses remain largely notification displays. Snap's architecture sits apart: local machine learning for 3D scene mapping, electrochromic lenses, and application logic running entirely on the device.
The weight trade-off tells the story. At 132 to 136 grams, the Specs weigh twice what Ray-Ban's weigh (70 grams) but half what Snap's 2024 developer version did (226 grams). This suggests Snap's engineering focused on processing power and battery life over form factor—accepting the bulk to enable untethered operation.
The hardware includes on-device machine learning for spatial understanding: instant 3D floor, wall and furniture mapping. Applications like a virtual measuring tape that understands depth and AR turn-by-turn navigation embedded in the visual field rely on this local compute. No cloud round-trip, no latency penalty.
At $2,195, the Specs price between consumer smart glasses and professional mixed reality headsets. That gap is intentional. Snap is not competing for your pocket; it is selling to venue operators who can justify the cost through foot traffic, engagement metrics and premium experiences. A museum or theme park can bundle the glasses into an admission package or upsell them as an experiential add-on. The unit economics differ entirely from consumer hardware.
Snap's prior AR Spectacles, developer-focused devices featuring 3D hand tracking, established the foundation. The new Specs commercialize that roadmap—same principle of gesture control and spatial interaction, scaled to a shipping product with practical lenses and battery life.
The strategy avoids direct consumer combat with Meta's Ray-Ban ecosystem or Apple's marketing machine. Instead, Snap captures a narrow but defensible niche: premium AR experiences in controlled environments where the weight penalty and price point evaporate against immersive value. Whether that niche can sustain a hardware business remains the open question.
