The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Washington Commanders 24-16 on Sept. 13 in a Week 1 matchup at home.
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts threw three touchdown passes. He connected with Dallas Goedert for a 17-yard score in the second quarter and again for a 43-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Hurts also found Dontayvion Wicks for a 9-yard touchdown, marking Wicks' first score as an Eagle.
Washington struck first. Drew Stevens kicked a 55-yard field goal at 11:23 of the first quarter to give the Commanders a 3-0 lead.
Philadelphia answered in the second quarter. Goedert's 17-yard touchdown catch made it 7-3 after Jake Elliott's extra point. Hurts' second touchdown pass to Wicks extended the lead to 14-3.
Washington responded before halftime when Jacory Croskey-Merritt rushed for a 1-yard touchdown at 1:50 of the second quarter. Stevens' extra point attempt was blocked, leaving the Commanders down 14-9.
Elliott kicked a 35-yard field goal in the third quarter to push Philadelphia's lead to 17-9.
Washington closed the gap in the fourth quarter. Stefon Diggs caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jayden Daniels at 9:59, and Stevens' kick made it 17-16.
Hurts then sealed the win with his third touchdown pass to Goedert, a 43-yard connection at 6:02 of the fourth quarter. Elliott's extra point set the final score at 24-16.
Daniels completed 16 of 31 pass attempts for 157 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions. Tight end John Bates had two receptions for 13 yards on three targets.
