The downhill leg to the office went smoothly. The return journey uphill at 87°F exposed the machine's constraints. Battery drained to 5 percent. Internal temperature climbed to 84°C. The robot collapsed within sight of home. Whether power depletion or thermal shutdown caused the failure remained ambiguous—a bad sign for a device positioned as practical.

Unitree's business model hinges on manufacturing scale and low-cost labor to undercut Western competitors by 80 to 90 percent. That math works for academic labs and hobbyists. It breaks for commercial deployment. The robot lacks arms, eliminating household tasks. Battery life and thermal management make it unreliable for consistent outdoor work. Wheeled robots offer faster delivery logistics. Drones handle inspection jobs better.

Geopolitical friction complicates the pitch. U.S. lawmakers have flagged dual-use concerns around Chinese robotics exports. Buying direct from China means facing tariffs, shipping delays and voided warranties—hidden costs that erode the price advantage.

Unitree's challenge is architectural, not just economic. A $4,000 quadruped with unreliable endurance and no manipulation capability occupies the worst spot in the competitive matrix: too expensive to be a toy, too limited to be a tool. The company has shipped units globally and built real volume. But volume into a market with no clear use case is just inventory.
