Salesforce launched a plugin for Anthropic's Claude that allows users to query, update, and act on live CRM data without opening the Salesforce application. The plugin ships with 37 pre-built sales skills covering meeting preparation, deal health reviews, and pipeline analysis. Select pilot customers have access today, with an open beta planned for September.

The move amounts to strategic self-cannibalization. Salesforce is surrendering direct interface control while betting that its governed data model and transaction layer become more valuable as the default back-end for AI workflows. The wager: Anthropic owns the user experience, but Salesforce owns the source of truth.

This inverts traditional SaaS logic. For decades, control of the interface meant control of the customer relationship and switching costs. Salesforce is betting that AI agents will commoditize interfaces—making it rational to cede them early rather than watch a rival do it first.

Figma, by contrast, is pursuing the opposite strategy. CEO Dylan Field wants users working directly inside the design application itself, not delegating to an external AI environment. Claude Design (Beta) has not yet achieved the capability to intelligently modify components within Figma's system, but the trajectory is clear: AI tools that operate inside design environments could make average execution substantially chea. The two approaches reflect divergent bets on where value concentrates in an AI-native stack. Salesforce believes it lies in the data and transaction layer underneath the interface. Figma believes it lies in owning the workflow environment itself, embedding AI as a tool inside rather than relocating the user to an external agent.
