Venture capitalist Tim Draper warned Thursday that the U.S. dollar faces debasement through government spending and inflation, urging families, companies, and governments to acquire bitcoin ahead of a potential exodus from fiat currency.

Draper outlined a three-point plan on Sept. 10. Families should own enough bitcoin to cover six months of living expenses. Companies should hold sufficient bitcoin to pay employees for four weeks. Governments should allocate a percentage of treasury reserves to bitcoin.

Draper's warning drew from a childhood lesson. His father, Bill Dra gave him a million Confederate dollar bill and told him it was worthless. "That's what's coming for the U.S. dollar," Draper said, predicting that panic will erupt once merchants begin refusing the currency and people rush to convert dollars to bitcoin.

Draper predicts a domino effect: retailers accept bitcoin, then transition to accepting only bitcoin, triggering widespread panic and dollar conversion. Bitcoin's fixed supply of 21 million coins protects against the inflation that erodes fiat currency.

Draper's track record lends weight to his conviction. In 2014, he purchased approximately 30,000 BTC during a U.S. Marshals auction of assets seized from Silk Road, paying around $632 per coin. That same year, when bitcoin traded near $180, he predicted it would reach $10,000 within roughly three years. Bitcoin crossed $10,000 in 2017.

Bitcoin traded at $76,822 as of Sept. 10. Draper continues urging individuals to own bitcoin to avoid panic during a potential shift away from the dollar.
