Oracle has positioned itself as a primary beneficiary of the AI infrastructure buildout through a $300 billion computing deal with OpenAI. The five-year contract, scheduled to begin in 2027, mandates OpenAI's purchase of extensive computing resources from Oracle, estimated to require 4.5 gigawatts of infrastructure.

The agreement drove Oracle's remaining performance obligations (RPO)—unfulfilled contract value—to surge 359 percent year-over-year in the fiscal quarter ending around September 2025. By mid-2026, Oracle's RPO ranged between $523 billion and $638 billion.

Oracle shares climbed as much as 43 percent following the initial announcement, briefly elevating founder Larry Ellison to the world's wealthiest individual. The stock has extended recent momentum, rising over 3 percent in overnight trading and 12.6 percent over three days.

The risk asymmetry is sharp. Oracle's debt has increased to finance necessary data center expansion, but several initiatives have encountered delays, with new timelines now extending into 2028. The company's valuation now depends almost entirely on OpenAI's ability to execute—and to sustain the economics of its AI operations. OpenAI has not yet demonstrated profitable unit economics at scale.

Should OpenAI's growth momentum falter, restructure its computing contracts, or delay capex deployment beyond current timelines, Oracle's inflated RPO could compress rapidly. The company has traded upside optionality on AI infrastructure for concentrated, execution-dependent risk on a single partner. Investors should monitor: (1) Oracle's debt-to-cash flow trajectory as infrastructure spending accelerates; (2) OpenAI's path to profitability and actual capex deployment rates against the contract schedule; (3) any revision to the 2027 ramp timeline. A delay beyond 2027 or a material reduction in OpenAI's committed capex would represent a material negative surprise to Oracle's guidance.
