Apple is expected to unveil a foldable iPhone next week, with speculation centering on three potential names: iPhone Ultra, iPhone Fold, and iPhone Duo.
The iPhone Duo name has emerged as a possibility despite limited public evidence. The designation would reference the device's dual screens and align with its physical design.
Apple has a mixed history with the Duo branding. The company launched the PowerBook Duo line in the 1990s and more recently used Duo for its MagSafe Duo Charger in the early 2020s. However, Microsoft's Surface Duo—a dual-screen Android smartphone released in 2020—may complicate the choice. Intel also deployed Core Duo and Core 2 Duo processor branding in the 2000s, suggesting potential customer confusion.
A stronger contender appears to be iPhone Ultra. In April, former Macworld reporter Filipe Espósito cited a source saying the foldable would carry that name. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman later reported that Apple employees internally refer to the device as the iPhone Ultra, though he has not confirmed it as the final choice.
Apple has already anchored the Ultra brand across its portfolio. The company uses it for the Apple Watch Ultra and CarPlay Ultra, and for high-performance M-series chips including the M1 Ultra, M2 Ultra, M3 Ultra, and M5 Ultra. That existing brand architecture suggests Ultra offers stronger leverage.
The competitive landscape complicates matters. Samsung uses Galaxy S26 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold8 naming—establishing both "Ultra" and "Fold" as category signals in the foldable market. Apple's choice will signal whether it prioritizes category clarity or brand differentiation.
