Oracle has locked in a five-year, $300 billion computing contract with OpenAI, positioning itself as the AI startup's primary infrastructure provider. The deal, set to begin in 2027, requires OpenAI to purchase 4.5 gigawatts of computing resources and has become the dominant driver of Oracle's financial guidance—remaining performance obligations (RPO) surged 359 percent year-over-year in the fiscal quarter ending around September 2025.

By mid-2026, Oracle's total RPO reached $523 billion to $638 billion, with the OpenAI contract accounting for the bulk of that expansion. The stock responded decisively: Oracle shares jumped as much as 43 percent following the announcement, briefly propelling founder Larry Ellison to the top of the global wealth rankings.

Oracle is also embedded in Project Stargate, the $500 billion AI infrastructure initiative launched in January 2025 with OpenAI and other partners. This dual exposure—direct $300 billion contract plus broader Stargate participation—gives Oracle significant leverage to the AI buildout thesis. The company has also deepened integration with OpenAI by enabling access to OpenAI models through its Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Marketplace as of June 2026, allowing customers to deploy those tools using existing Oracle Cloud credits.

The execution risk is real. Oracle has taken on elevated debt to support its expanding data center operations, and several of those initiatives have encountered delays. Timelines have slipped into 2028, creating a maturity mismatch between near-term debt service and delayed revenue recognition.

Oracle's stock has shown acute sensitivity to OpenAI developments. Positive news—like recent Pentagon AI contract wins and buzz around OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra product reveal—have triggered rallies. Oracle shares rose more than 3 percent in overnight trading late Monday, extending a three-day, 12.6 percent gain. But concerns about OpenAI's operating burn rate or delays to an expected initial public offering have created sharp downward pressure.

The structural risk is OpenAI itself. Should the startup's expansion falter, restructure its computing contracts, or face unexpected funding constraints, Oracle's elevated RPO could contract sharply. The company's near-term financial narrative now depends on a private AI developer whose long-term economic model remains unproven. Investors betting on Oracle are effectively taking a leveraged long position on OpenAI's sustained growth and execution—a bet that carries real downside if either dimension disappoints.
