The privacy coin sector has surged 213 percent above its level when Bitcoin peaked on Oct. 6, 2025, making privacy assets the only cryptocurrency sector trading above that specific high.
Most of the broader market remains significantly underwater. The median asset among the top 200 cryptocurrencies sits 58 percent below its price on that October 2025 date. Bitcoin itself trades 36 percent below its October 2025 high.
Other sectors show similar underperformance. Decentralized finance assets are roughly 27 percent below Bitcoin's October 2025 peak. Gaming tokens have seen a steeper decline, trading 74 percent lower during the same period.
Zcash (ZEC) drives much of the privacy sector's gains. ZEC has risen 2,496 percent over the past year and now accounts for approximately 62 percent of the privacy sector's total market capitalization, climbing from the 82nd largest asset to the 7th largest by market cap.
Institutional access reinforced Zcash's latest leg up. Grayscale launched its Zcash ETF on Aug. 25. By Sept. 4, the ETF had attracted about $34.4 million in net inflows as ZEC prices pushed above $1,000.
On-chain data shows a corresponding increase in Zcash network activity. The network's computing power rose from around 25 GSol/s in late August to more than 30 GSol/s, reflecting heightened participation.
Zcash futures open interest reached roughly $2.3 billion, indicating substantial leverage in the market and sensitivity to liquidations and price movements.
Even excluding Zcash, the privacy sector demonstrates robust performance. The basket of privacy assets without ZEC is up 85 percent over one year and shows a 56 percent gain since Bitcoin's October 2025 high, confirming a broader sector trend.
All eight privacy assets with at least one year of trading history are positive over that period. In contrast, only about one in eight of the top 200 cryptocurrencies can claim similar gains.
Monero (XMR) doubled over the past year. Monero, Dash (DASH) and Horizen (ZEN) have each outperformed Bitcoin during the last 90 days. Earlier in 2026, Dash surged 71 percent alongside gains in XMR, Decred (DCR) and ZEN.
Monero broke out of a multi-year trading range when XMR surged above $600. When Bitcoin cleared $81,000, ZEC and DASH were among the strongest movers.
The privacy sector's market value expanded significantly. One year ago, the sector was worth $7.1 billion. Glassnode now values it at $33.6 billion, representing an addition of approximately $26.5 billion in market capitalization. Nearly half of this expansion occurred during the latest 30-day period.
This sector growth occurred during an unusually broad crypto bounce, with 91.5 percent of the top 200 assets gaining over the past month. However, this breadth disappears over longer periods; only 25 top-200 assets remain positive over one year. Among the 25 largest assets, only ZEC, Hyperliquid (HYPE), XMR and WhiteBIT Coin (WBT) sit above their Oct. 6, 2025 prices.
Regulatory risk persists for privacy assets. These cryptocurrencies have historically faced tougher scrutiny from exchanges and anti-money laundering bodies due to their anonymity features.
