Decentralized finance protocol Neutrl suspended minting and redemptions for its NUSD synthetic dollar on Aug. 14 after unspecified circumstances affected protocol reserves. The cause and scale of any potential impairment remain unclear, impacting approximately $53.6 million in NUSD tokens currently in circulation.

Neutrl also paused other protocol functions, stating it acted on legal advice while assessing the impact. The protocol did not identify the specific affected asset or counterparty, nor did it disclose whether reserves suffered a realized loss. A timeline for resuming operations was not provided.

The suspension prevents approved counterparties from exchanging NUSD for its backing assets—a mechanism critical for maintaining the synthetic dollar's peg to the U.S. dollar.

Following Neutrl's announcement, structured-yield protocol Strata paused minting, redemptions and related functions for contracts within its Neutrl market. Strata confirmed its other markets remained operational.

NUSD is designed to track the U.S. dollar by using yield-bearing crypto assets and market-neutral strategies rather than relying on traditional bank deposits.

A February assessment by risk-advisory team BA Labs had classified a proposed NUSD integration as higher risk, citing concerns regarding counterparty, operational and liquidity exposure. At the time, NUSD supply was estimated at $226 million, with reserves at $233.7 million, implying a 103.6 percent collateralization ratio. More than 87 percent of these reserves were held through Fireblocks, with smaller amounts distributed across centralized exchanges.

BA Labs' analysis also highlighted specific redemption limitations. Direct redemptions were restricted to KYC or KYB-approved counterparties. Requests exceeding Neutrl's liquid buffer could enter a queue, targeted for completion within 48 hours but without guarantee.

Data from RWA.xyz showed NUSD with a market capitalization of about $53.6 million on Friday, representing an 18.4 percent decline over 30 days. Monthly transfer volume fell 72.4 percent to $71.4 million. NUSD was trading at approximately $0.9984, with 615 holders and 347 active addresses over the preceding 30 days.

On May 25, verification platform Accountable stated its Neutrl dashboard provided continuous cryptographic proof that NUSD reserves matched the protocol's liabilities.

Neutrl stated it would provide timing and next steps for its operations when that information becomes available.
