Ulefone introduced the RugOne Xsnap 7 Pro at MWC 2026, launching a new sub-brand centered on a modular smartphone concept. The device features a thumb-sized action camera that physically detaches from the phone's rear chassis via magnetic backplane.

When separated, the camera functions as an independent recording module that can mount on helmets, shirts or bike handlebars. The phone serves as both a wireless viewscreen and a processing and storage hub for footage. The main unit includes a 9,000 mAh battery that charges the camera module when docked—a charging architecture borrowed from rugged devices like Oukitel's WP300.

The Xsnap 7 Pro itself carries a 50-MP main camera and a dedicated 64-MP night-vision sensor. Ulefone plans future modules including thermal imaging for industrial inspections and night-vision enhancers with swappable optics.

Modular phones have a poor track record. Google abandoned Project Ara before reaching consumers. Motorola's Moto Z lineup with swappable Moto Mods failed to gain traction due to expensive add-ons and limited ecosystem depth. The core issue: users saw no compelling reason to carry extra components.

Rugged phones present a different case. This niche caters to professionals who want to consolidate dedicated field gear into a single pocket device. Ulefone is betting this segment will pay for modularity where mainstream consumers would not.

Competitors are testing the same hypothesis. TECNO debuted a magnetic modular interconnect at MWC 2026 using pogo-pin connectors and wireless compatibility via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

For Ulefone's approach to work, two conditions must hold: the ecosystem must deliver modules users actually need at prices that undercut buying separate dedicated devices, and the company must avoid the execution failures that sank past modular platforms. Success requires proving that consolidation saves money and weight for a specialized user base—not just offering modularity for its own sake.
