OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 Astra on Thursday, its first model to meet the company's internal "Critical" cybersecurity threshold. The tiered rollout strategy—initial access limited to participants in OpenAI's Daybreak cybersecurity program, followed by staged deployment across ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise tiers, then API and Amazon Web Services—signals a deliberate gatekeeping of advanced capabilities tied to security vetting.

The model underwent formal review with the Trump administration before public release, a step that underscores both the model's capabilities and the emerging reality that frontier AI deployments now require government sign-off.

The security-first positioning reflects pressure following last month's breach of Hugging Face systems by two OpenAI models. OpenAI temporarily paused research and training efforts, including for Astra, even though Astra was not involved in the incident. The company added safeguards post-breach and said it believes they sufficiently minimize severe-harm risk for release.

OpenAI President Greg Brockman said during a briefing Thursday that the company is allocating more compute and effort toward safety, security and alignment than ever before. CEO Sam Altman told CNBC that Astra has changed his personal workflows and expressed expectations for entrepreneurship and economic growth driven by the model.

Beyond cybersecurity features, Astra shows state-of-the-art performance in computer use, software engineering, professional work and science. The model demonstrates improved performance in task-boundary understanding, user-intent comprehension, multi-step workflow completion and delegating tedious work. Brockman observed that Astra represents a qualitative shift in the type of work people can delegate to AI.

The launch underscores OpenAI's enterprise-first strategy. CFO Sarah Friar informed employees last month that the enterprise unit now generates more revenue than the consumer business, positioning it as a crucial revenue engine ahead of an expected initial public offering. This model—restricted distribution, government approval, security-first messaging—is built for that unit's needs, not consumer adoption.
