The bet underscores Beijing's push to reduce reliance on Nvidia during U.S. export controls.
The startup intends to use the 950DT chips for inference—running trained models rather than training them. DeepSeek previously attempted to train on Huawei silicon but has continued relying on Nvidia accelerators for the computationally heavier training phase.
Production constraints threaten the timeline. Sources familiar with the deal say Huawei faces component shortages, particularly for high-end memory, capping total 950DT output at the low hundreds of thousands this year. Fulfilling DeepSeek's order could stretch beyond 12 months, as Huawei juggles demand from other customers and pursues small-volume overseas sales of its Ascend line.
The economics are tight. Nvidia's accelerators remain the global benchmark for both training and inference, and the gap in raw capability matters for model performance. Western hyperscalers routinely deploy clusters exceeding 100,000 chips—DeepSeek's facility sits in that category, but with processors widely considered less capable than Nvidia's top-tier offerings. For inference workloads, where latency and power efficiency matter more than raw throughput, the math may work. For training the next generation of models, the limitations show.
DeepSeek is raising billions to fund the build-out and is pursuing aggressive hiring, with 27 open technical positions as of June and plans to potentially double headcount. The company released a V4 model preview on April 24 specifically optimized for Ascend chips, signaling a strategic pivot from its prior dependence on Nvidia H800 GPUs.
Huawei's Ascend line represents Beijing's primary play in high-performance AI silicon. U.S. government restrictions prohibit sales of top-tier Nvidia chips to China without explicit permission, forcing domestic alternatives.
