Ambient is building a Layer 1 blockchain that uses Proof-of-Intelligence (PoI) as its consensus mechanism, replacing traditional mining with AI inference provision. Validators secure the chain by executing and verifying computational work rather than solving arbitrary hashing puzzles.
The protocol operates through an on-chain auction system. Users submit AI inference jobs to the auction, where validators bid to execute the tasks. Upon completion, validators return the output and commit the logits produced during inference. Selected validators verify that the claimed inference was performed correctly.
Verified AI work accumulates as Logit Stake (LStake). Validators with higher LStake gain greater influence in future leader selection, directly linking network security to verifiable AI contributions.
Ambient differentiates between externally demanded inference jobs—originating from customer requests—and network-generated work. This prioritizes customer-driven compute over unused capacity.
PoI conceptually contrasts with Proof-of-Work systems, which consume energy on arbitrary computations. The approach channels resources toward productive AI tasks instead. Similar mechanisms have emerged in projects including Bittensor and Lightchain AI, which demonstrated live implementations in 2026.
The design addresses environmental concerns tied to PoW by eliminating energy-intensive hashing while simultaneously contributing to AI infrastructure development.
