Elon Musk confirmed SpaceX is building a foundry in Bastrop, Texas, to manufacture gas turbine blades and vanes. The in-house production aims to accelerate turbine deployment by up to 18 months—a move that targets the industry's most acute constraint: not chips, but electricity.

The power grid has become the second bottleneck in AI infrastructure buildout. While GPU lead times stretch months, gas turbine production is completely sold out. GE Vernova reports its capacity is booked through 2030, almost entirely due to AI data center orders.

Major hyperscalers—Amazon, Google, Meta, OpenAI, and Microsoft—are now installing private gas-fired plants adjacent to data centers. The calculus is straightforward: new generation capacity attached to your facility beats waiting for grid upgrades. This represents a tactical shift from years of renewable commitments. Natural gas is the fast path.

The production bottleneck sits in blade casting. Each turbine blade must be grown as a single crystal inside a vacuum furnace, a process that can take days. The blades operate at 3,000 to 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit—roughly 800 degrees above the melting point of the alloy itself. Only internal cooling channels and thermal-barrier coatings prevent failure. Only four companies globally have mastered this process at scale, and all are running at capacity. Power-plant blades are far larger than jet-engine versions, compounding the difficulty.

Musk stated on X that SpaceX and Tesla are scaling solar production to 100 gigawatts per year. He noted that natural gas will remain necessary to supplement solar for several years. "By doing in-house casting at SpaceX, we can accelerate nat gas turbines coming online by up to 18 months," he said.

The foundry's existence emerged through job postings for a blades and vanes facility. Due diligence specialist Corey Trinetti reported that SpaceX acquired approximately 830 acres near its Starlink factory in Bastrop between March and June. Musk confirmed the details on Aug. 28 in response to existing reports.

The strategy carries an implicit bet on natural gas as a long-term bridge fuel. Environmental scrutiny of fossil fuel infrastructure is intensifying—legal actions and health studies already shadow the sector. A hyperscaler data center powered by gas turbines is defensible as temporary, but a decade-long reliance on natural gas production growth runs against stated net-zero timelines.
