MicroStrategy's $2.8B Bitcoin Unrealized Gain Shows Resume of Accumulation

MicroStrategy is positioned to resume Bitcoin purchases after a roughly two-month acquisition hiatus. Co-founder Michael Saylor posted "We're Back" alongside the company's Bitcoin holdings tracker on X, a signal that has historically preceded new buys. Prediction market Polymarket currently prices a 96 percent probability of an announcement between Aug. 25 and 31.

The company holds 840,447 Bitcoin valued at approximately $66.2 billion at a Bitcoin price near $78,719. Against a reported total purchase cost of $63.36 billion, this position carries an unrealized gain of roughly $2.8 billion—a substantial buffer for treasury management.

MicroStrategy commands $6.69 billion in total cash and reserves split into two pools. A $5.10 billion reserve covers debt payments, interest obligations and preferred stock dividends. A separate $1.59 billion cash pool offers operational flexibility for Bitcoin acquisitions, stock buybacks or additional debt payments.

The potential resumption would end the company's longest purchasing pause in recent months, following its last reported Bitcoin acquisition on June 22, 2026. The timing coincides with Bitcoin trading above the company's average purchase cost.

While Saylor has not publicly confirmed a new purchase, MicroStrategy typically announces Bitcoin acquisitions through SEC filings.

A counterargument to immediate accumulation: MicroStrategy sold $218 million worth of Bitcoin in 2026 across two transactions—$81 million and $135 million—to boost liquidity for dividends and strengthen dollar reserves. These sales represent less than 0.5 percent of total holdings, suggesting tactical liquidity management rather than a shift away from long-term accumulation. Saylor previously reversed his stance on never selling Bitcoin, but the transaction scale does not indicate a broad change in asset allocation.

MicroStrategy's digital credit vehicle, STRC, grew from $2.8 billion in notional value at the end of 2025 to $10.5 billion by the second quarter of 2026, reflecting the company's evolving financial structure.
