Bitcoin recorded a 1.6 percent gain this week, masking significant divergence across crypto sectors. Layer 2 protocols, Real World Assets, and tokenized treasury positions continued grinding lower while DePIN and crypto gaming assets led an end-of-year rebound.
This reversal is stark given 2025's performance. CoinGecko's year-end report showed RWAs advanced 185.76 percent, while crypto gaming and DePIN assets plunged over 75 percent. Gaming's downturn stemmed from reliance on speculative NFTs and unproven revenue models, exacerbated by macroeconomic shocks including tariff announcements.
DePIN now shows signs of bottoming into 2026. The sector's recovery is driven by increasing real-world adoption and verifiable revenue streams—capital flowing back to measurable unit economics rather than narrative bets.
The continued downward pressure on Layer 2s, RWAs, and the treasury trade reflects a rotation away from established yield plays. On-chain participants are evaluating underlying revenue models and adoption metrics rather than chasing broad sector trends, driving capital into assets with demonstrable fundamentals.
