MICROSOFT has released Windows 11 version 26H2 to its Release Preview Channel, positioning the update for public rollout in late September or early October. The move is strategic: it resets the Windows lifecycle to defer major migrations for enterprise customers.
Version 26H2 is not a substantial feature release. Its core purpose is to extend support windows. Windows 11 25H2 support ends in October 2027. With 26H2, Microsoft pushes that deadline to 2028, buying enterprises a full year before they must adopt Windows 11 27H2—which will be the next major release.
The company has confirmed that 26H2 shares a servicing branch with 24H2 and 25H2, meaning all three versions receive continuous feature and security updates. The technical shift is modest: a build number bump to 26300 (up from 25H2's 26200 and 24H2's 26100).
For enterprise IT, the most immediate change is Windows Backup enabled by default—a shift that affects how corporate IT departments manage system recovery. Microsoft also introduced app-specific taskbar actions designed to integrate with Microsoft 365 Enterprise, likely embedding agentic productivity features.
The broader Windows 11 feature set—File Explorer improvements, Start menu updates, and other incremental enhancements—rolls out fully to all users with 26H2. Non-Insider users will receive the update via an enablement package at general availability.
Release Preview Channel access means the build is near-final, reducing the risk of significant issues before public launch.
