Sun framed the upgrade as essential to TRON's competitive positioning. "As the founder of a major cryptocurrency, we should, while focusing on the benefits of AI applications, pay close attention to the risks brought by AI development, with quantum computing's decryption being the most core key," he said.

While quantum computing does not currently pose a practical threat to existing blockchain cryptography, the timeline reflects industry-wide preparation for future vulnerabilities. Ethereum developers anticipate Layer 1 protocol upgrades concluding by 2029, with a broader execution-layer migration requiring additional years. Solana Foundation has already tested post-quantum digital signatures on testnet. Google set a 2029 target for its own post-quantum cryptography migration.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong announced a quantum computing and blockchain security advisory board in January 2026, signaling major exchange commitment to the transition. TRON's 2026 mainnet target puts the network ahead of most competitors in practical quantum-resistant deployment.

Sun assured users that TRON holdings will remain secure throughout the migration.
