A humanoid robot completed the 100-meter dash in 9.39 seconds at the second World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing on Aug. 22, undercutting the 9.58-second mark Usain Bolt set in 2009. Three separate robots broke that human record during the competition, according to organizers. The event was held at the National Speed Skating Oval, the venue built for China's 2022 Winter Olympics.
The spectacle exposed hardware limits as clearly as it showcased capability. During preliminary heats, at least one robot crossed the finish line, collapsed and caught fire. Cheerleader units malfunctioned on the field, shaking uncontrollably. Others ran directly into foam barriers and sparked. The failures were as visible online as the record-setting runs—and equally revealing: pushing machines to failure in competition generates engineering data that lab tests alone do not.
Organizers reported that more than 2,000 humanoid robots representing 16 nations took part across 51 event categories and more than 1,000 individual competitions. Disciplines ranged from the 400-meter run and high jump to table tennis and soccer. The games ran five days alongside the 2026 World Robot Conference, where companies exhibited roughly 3,000 products, drawn almost entirely from Chinese manufacturers.
China produces the overwhelming majority of humanoid robots built anywhere in the world. The games' opening ceremony featured hundreds of humanoid machines moving in coordinated formation across the oval's infield—a choreographed display of motion control staged in front of government officials and industry executives. The event was explicitly designed to demonstrate Chinese leadership in robotics manufacturing and, implicitly, to show that domestic development no longer requires foreign components or partnerships.
The timing matters. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission announced a ban on imports of new foreign-made humanoid robots last month, citing national security concerns and explicitly naming China in its ruling. The FCC has jurisdiction over devices that use radio-frequency communication—which most advanced humanoid robots rely on for wireless control and data transmission—giving the agency a legal hook for the import restriction.
The Pentagon separately added Unitree Robotics, one of China's most prominent humanoid robot manufacturers, to its list of companies suspected of maintaining ties to the Chinese military. Beijing has disputed those allegations. Unitree's robots have appeared widely in commercial demonstrations and viral online videos, making the company one of the most recognizable names in the sector globally.
For U.S. robotics companies, the FCC ban creates an immediate market protection. Boston Dynamics, Agility Robotics and Figure AI—the three most capitalized American humanoid robot developers—all manufacture domestically and are unaffected by supply chain restrictions. But none has demonstrated performance anywhere close to a 9.39-second 100-meter run. The Beijing games generated public-record performance data that now shapes investor expectations and government procurement conversations in ways that matter to capital allocation and procurement decisions.
Nvidia, whose GPUs power the inference and training workloads behind most advanced robotics systems, closed up 2.2 percent on Aug. 25 at $213.05. The company has positioned its Isaac robotics platform as the dominant software stack for humanoid robot development globally, selling to both U.S. and Chinese manufacturers. That dual-market position is now complicated—though not yet resolved—by the FCC ruling and Pentagon listings.
