Apple introduced Vehicle Motion Cues in 2024 as an accessibility feature for iPhone, iPad and MacBook. The function draws on each device's built-in accelerometer and gyroscope to place small dots around the edge of the display that move in sync with the vehicle's actual motion.
The underlying problem is sensory mismatch. When a passenger stares at a static screen, the eyes register no movement while the inner ear detects every turn, brake and acceleration. That conflict produces motion sickness. The dots resolve it by giving the eyes a visual signal that matches what the vestibular system already feels: the dots slide forward when the car brakes, sweep left when the car turns right.
The feature lives under Accessibility settings in iOS, iPadOS and macOS. Users can switch it on, off or set it to activate automatically whenever the device detects vehicle motion. Dot size, color and density are all adjustable, though the defaults work for most users without modification.
For frequent access, iOS 18 and above support toggling Vehicle Motion Cues via Back Tap—a double-tap on the rear of the iPhone that can be mapped to the feature through Accessibility settings. That shortcut is worth setting up because the dots can sit motionless over maps and text on long straight roads, making a quick toggle useful.
Apple's implementation has one design gap: when a vehicle holds a straight line for an extended period, the dots park themselves on screen without movement and can obscure text or imagery. Dimming stationary dots automatically would fix this, but Apple has not yet made that adjustment.
Google confirmed it is rolling out a comparable Android feature called Motion Assist. The timing puts Google roughly two years behind Apple's launch. Motion Assist works on the same principle—peripheral visual cues synchronized with vehicle movement—and targets the same sensory-conflict mechanism that causes nausea.
The two-year lag on a feature this straightforward in concept reveals Apple's structural advantage. Vehicle Motion Cues depends on real-time accelerometer and gyroscope fusion, a capability difficult to replicate without tight control of both the chip and the operating system. Google's delay in building Motion Assist demonstrates exactly that constraint.
Vehicle Motion Cues is not a revenue line for Apple on its own. Its business value is retention: a feature that makes iPhones usable in situations where they previously were not raises the switching cost for anyone who travels frequently. Google's decision to build Motion Assist tacitly acknowledges that value.
The accessibility-to-mainstream pipeline is well established at Apple. Features originally designed for users with specific physical needs—dictation, voice control, large text—routinely become general-use functions once the broader population discovers them. Vehicle Motion Cues follows the same trajectory: shipped under Accessibility in 2024, now finding daily use among road-tripping passengers and remote workers who treat a moving camper van as a mobile office.
