Changpeng Zhao has stopped using his public cryptocurrency wallet, citing an unmanageable flood of unsolicited meme coins that made routine balance management untenable. CZ said the address became "almost impossible to clean out" as promotional tokens, dust and spam assets piled in faster than he could address them.
The mechanics are straightforward: public blockchain addresses accept any compatible asset sent by any party without the owner's consent. That architectural reality turned CZ's wallet into a target. Promotional meme coins and spam tokens accumulated indefinitely, and every attempt he made to manage them created new problems.
Specifically, attempts to burn unwanted tokens backfired. Each burn transaction drew attention from traders monitoring the wallet, who interpreted the on-chain activity as a signal and traded accordingly. One trader reportedly made $282,000—a 29x return—by spotting CZ's wallet burning $MARSCOIN and immediately buying the token, paying 100 times the standard gas fee to get the transaction confirmed first.
That dynamic made cleaning the wallet actively counterproductive. Any interaction with an unsolicited token contract—even a disposal transaction—generated trading activity and invited more spam. Developers of new tokens have an obvious incentive to send assets to a wallet as prominent as CZ's: a burn transaction from his address functions as free publicity and drives price action.
Before retiring the address entirely, CZ said he plans to donate the remaining tokens to Giggle Academy, the education nonprofit he founded after leaving Binance. That step disposes of the holdings without triggering further speculative trading on his burns.
The episode also produced a concrete product outcome. CZ initially expressed doubt that a wallet-level "hide" feature would have broad utility, but reversed that position after criticism. "I made a mistake. A few people mentioned it is a useful feature," he said, adding that the Trust Wallet team told him a function called "Ignore coins" already exists within the app.
Accessibility is the sticking point. CZ said the option is currently buried five clicks deep inside Trust Wallet's interface and said he expects the team to make the feature more prominent. The distinction matters practically: a wallet application cannot stop legitimate blockchain transfers from reaching a public address or remove them from the chain. What the interface can control is whether users are forced to see every unsolicited token that arrives.
Making "Ignore coins" easier to reach would let any user with a public address suppress spam tokens from view without interacting with unknown contracts—an important security consideration, since interacting with unidentified token contracts carries real risk regardless of who holds the wallet.
CZ's situation is an extreme version of a problem that applies to any publicly identifiable wallet. Once an address appears on-chain and becomes associated with a known individual or institution, it draws unsolicited deposits. The more prominent the holder, the more incentive token issuers have to seed the address, because any subsequent on-chain interaction—even disposal—can be read as an endorsement or signal by traders scanning the mempool.
The $282,000 trade illustrates exactly how that loop works at the high-frequency level. The trader watching CZ's wallet identified a burn transaction in real time, assessed it as a bullish signal for $MARSCOIN and paid a premium in gas to execute ahead of broader market reaction. That kind of mempool-watching is not new, but CZ's case shows how routine wallet hygiene by a public figure gets weaponized into a trading strategy by outside actors.
Retiring the address sidesteps the problem entirely. The wallet remains visible on-chain—transactions do not disappear from a public ledger—but CZ's active use shifts to a new address without the accumulated attention and spam history. Whether that new address stays private long enough to remain functional depends on how carefully he guards it from public association.
