ANAHEIM, Calif. — Walt Disney Company CEO Josh D'Amaro opened D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event on Aug. 15, welcoming thousands of fans to what the company framed as a demonstration of its global reach — roughly 500,000 people currently inside Disney parks and aboard cruise ships, and more than four billion fans worldwide who engage with Disney content in some form.

The evening's main event was the Disney Entertainment Showcase at the Honda Center, a sold-out arena adjacent to the Anaheim Convention Center. Ginnifer Goodwin and Academy Award winner Ke Huy Quan, both starring in Walt Disney Animation Studios' "Zootopia 2" (2025), hosted the showcase, which included live performances, celebrity appearances and first looks at upcoming productions across film, television and streaming.

The most concrete announcement of the night came from Marvel Television: the first trailer for "VisionQuest," an original Disney+ series premiering Oct. 14, 2026. Paul Bettany, who originated the role of Vision in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, returns as the lead. James Spader joins as Ultron — his first appearance in the role since "Avengers: Age of Ultron" in 2015.

Marvel positioned "VisionQuest" as the closing chapter of a trilogy. The first installment, "WandaVision," aired on Disney+ in early 2021 and became one of the platform's most-discussed original series. The second chapter, "Agatha All Along," ran in 2024. The Oct. 14 premiere date puts "VisionQuest" squarely in the fall window, a slot Disney and streaming competitors treat as prime subscriber-retention territory ahead of the holiday quarter.

Dana Walden, president and chief creative officer of The Walt Disney Company, also appeared on stage to open the entertainment showcase.

D'Amaro's remarks placed the fan event in a broader commercial context. "Right now, nearly half a million people are in our parks and on our cruise ships. Millions more are watching our stories in theaters or at home. Someone right now is seeing The Lion King on Broadway for the very first time," D'Amaro said. He described Disney's relationship with consumers not as a customer base or an audience but as "an actual connection" spanning more than four billion people — roughly half the global population.

The D23 event spans Disney, Pixar, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, Disney+, Hulu, ESPN and Disney Experiences. The Anaheim Convention Center portion features an expanded show floor with immersive brand experiences and exclusive merchandise. Visa is the presenting sponsor.

For Disney's streaming division, the "VisionQuest" trailer serves a direct business function. Disney+ has spent five years building Marvel as its flagship original-content franchise, and a trilogy conclusion carries built-in viewership from two prior installments. The Oct. 14 date lands after the Disney fiscal year ends in late September — meaning subscriber data tied to the premiere will appear in Q1 fiscal 2027 reporting, not the current fiscal year.

Spader's return as Ultron is the casting detail with the most immediate fan-engagement value. The character has not appeared in a live-action Marvel project in more than a decade, and his inclusion alongside Bettany's Vision sets up a direct narrative link to the "Age of Ultron" storyline that preceded "WandaVision." Marvel Television, rather than Marvel Studios, is the producing entity — the same structure used for "Agatha All Along" and other Disney+ series that sit adjacent to but distinct from the theatrical MCU films.
