SAN FRANCISCO — Instapaper launched version 10 of its iPhone and iPad app on Aug. 15, calling it the app's largest update in over a decade. The release arrives alongside a complete rebuild of the web platform—only the second full rewrite of the site since 2008—and the addition of AI Voices to the Android app.
The iOS redesign centers on Apple's Liquid Glass visual language, the same design system Apple introduced across its own apps. Instapaper 10 adds four new reading fonts: Literata, New York, Open Sans and Atkinson Hyperlegible, covering two serif and two sans-serif options. Users can now sort folders and tags in any order they choose, and every section of the app displays article counts.
Home Screen widgets arrive with this update as well. The widget shows the article currently in progress and the most recently saved items, and taps directly into the reading view. Instapaper added a condensed article list view as a separate display option for users who want more titles visible at once.
For iPad users, version 10 improves multitasking. Both iPhone and iPad users get more reliable background syncing and reduced article download times. A redesigned onboarding flow replaces the previous version.
The website overhaul is the more operationally significant change. The rebuilt site loads more than 60 percent faster than its predecessor. A three-column reading view on larger screens lets users browse their saved list and read an article at the same time; the layout can be disabled from the profile menu for users who prefer the older single-column approach.
Multi-select on the web received a substantial upgrade. Shift-clicking now selects a range of articles, and Select All captures every item in the list rather than only what is visible on screen. A full keyboard shortcut set covers archiving, tagging, moving and deleting—controls Instapaper's power users have lacked for years on the web.
Instapaper is not forcing users onto the new site immediately. The previous version remains accessible at old.instapa. com through the end of 2026, giving existing users roughly 16 months to adjust before the legacy layout disappears.
On Android, Instapaper rebuilt its text-to-speech system from scratch to support AI Voices—a feature iOS users have had for some time. The rebuild brings feature parity on audio playback between the two mobile platforms.
The timing matters. Pocket, Mozilla's read-it-later service, shut down earlier this year, and many of its users moved to Instapaper as the closest functional replacement. Instapaper now holds a stronger position in a market it previously shared with Pocket, and version 10 is the first major product push the company has made since that competitive dynamic shifted.
