NEW YORK—Reddit Inc. joins the S&P 500 before the open on Tuesday, Aug. 18, taking the seat vacated by AvalonBay Communities Inc.—a slot that opened only because S&P 500 constituent Equity Residential is acquiring AvalonBay in a deal expected to close soon. S&P Dow Jones Indices announced the changes Aug. 13 in an official press release.
The mechanism is standard index maintenance: when an existing S&P 500 member gets absorbed by another member, the target company disappears from the index and must be replaced. Equity Residential (NYSE: EQR) absorbing AvalonBay (NYSE: AVB) is exactly that scenario. Post-merger, the combined residential real estate company will trade under a new name—Vivmark Residential—on the NYSE under the ticker VMRK and will hold its place in the S&P 500.
Reddit (NYSE: RDDT) is the incoming beneficiary. The platform, which went public in March 2024, now earns a seat in the largest U.S. equity benchmark—a development that forces every S&P 500 index fund and ETF to buy RDDT shares before the Aug. 18 open. That mandatory buying drove the stock up more than 8.8 percent in after-hours trading on Aug. 13, the night of the announcement.
The scale of forced buying matters. Index funds tracking the S&P 500 collectively hold trillions of dollars in assets. Every manager running a passive S&P 500 product must add RDDT at a weight proportional to the stock's market capitalization before the index rebalances. That creates concentrated, time-certain demand—exactly the setup active traders front-run in the days before an inclusion date.
A separate but simultaneous change affects the S&P MidCap 400. Sun Communities Inc. (NYSE: SUI), a manufactured housing and RV resort REIT, joins the MidCap 400 before trading opens on Thursday, Aug. 20. It replaces Webster Financial Corp. (NYSE: WBS), which is being acquired by Banco Santander S.A. (NYSE: SAN)—the same M&A-displacement logic that opened Reddit's slot in the large-cap index.
Webster Financial's removal mirrors AvalonBay's: Banco Santander is buying the regional bank, so WBS exits the MidCap 400. Sun Communities steps in to fill the vacancy. The Santander-Webster deal is described as pending final conditions, with completion expected soon.
For Sun Communities, MidCap 400 inclusion carries its own passive-buying tailwind. Funds benchmarked to the S&P MidCap 400 must add SUI before Aug. 20. The directional setup is identical to RDDT: known buyers, known deadline, finite supply.
Reddit's index inclusion is a concrete validation of the company's post-IPO trajectory. The company listed at $34 per share in March 2024 and has since grown its market cap to a level qualifying it for one of the most tracked equity benchmarks in the world. S&P Dow Jones Indices screens for profitability—among other criteria—before admitting companies to the S&P 500, so inclusion confirms Reddit has cleared that bar.
The residential real estate picture inside the index is also shifting. Equity Residential and AvalonBay were both apartment REITs and S&P 500 constituents before the deal. Post-merger, Vivmark Residential will represent the combined entity—a larger, consolidated residential landlord holding a single index slot where two existed before. That consolidation reduces the residential REIT count inside the S&P 500 by one name.
Index reconstitutions of this type—triggered by M&A rather than scheduled quarterly reviews—happen throughout the year whenever deals close or are imminent. S&P Dow Jones Indices, a division of S&P Global (NYSE: SPGI), has discretion over timing and replacement selection. In this case, both replacement names (RDDT and SUI) enter via the M&A-displacement track, not a scheduled rebalance.
The Aug. 18 effective date gives active managers fewer than five trading sessions from the announcement date to position ahead of the passive flow. That compressed window is typical for M&A-driven additions and is shorter than the lead time usually granted in quarterly rebalances—giving traders who acted immediately on the Aug. 13 announcement the clearest advantage.
