SAN FRANCISCO — Google introduced the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, its latest foldable smartphone, featuring increased durability and expanded artificial intelligence capabilities. The device is nearly 10 percent lighter and about one millimeter thinner than its predecessor, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Pre-orders are open, with units shipping Aug. 20.
The Pixel 11 Pro Fold is three times more durable than prior models, a gain Google attributes to a new glass fiber composite back cover and a gearless hinge. The hinge protects the inner display and offers a larger bend radius, reducing crease visibility.
Both the inner and outer displays are 20 percent brighter, reaching 3,600 nits. The outer display uses Super Actua ultra-strong ceramic cover glass. The phone carries an IP68 dust and water protection rating.
Central to Google's strategy is deeper AI integration. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold runs on the new Tensor G6 chip, powering features including sign-to-text translation and hands-free interaction with Gemini, Google's AI assistant. "Google is hell-bent on transforming its Pixel phones into AI phones," Raymond Wong wrote for Gizmodo.
A new HiLight notification system uses LED lights around the camera's flash, providing color-coded glows for incoming calls from favorite contacts or during Gemini interactions. Google plans to add message notifications from contacts to HiLight over time.
Charging speeds have also increased. The device charges 50 percent in approximately 30 minutes with 30W wired charging. Wireless charging is 20 percent faster than the previous generation, supporting up to 25W Qi2.2. The battery lasts over 24 hours on a single charge.
Google also launched the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro XL. These phones feature thinner camera bars and improved scratch resistance. The base Pixel 11 camera bar is about 30 percent slimmer than its predecessor.
A new 48-megapixel main camera sensor across the Pixel 11 series delivers more detail. Google said the sensor offers 56 percent higher light sensitivity, supporting enhanced AI photography functions.
Building custom silicon like the Tensor G6 gives Google direct control over hardware-software integration—a vertical stack that rivals Apple's and widens the gap with Android competitors running off-the-shelf Qualcomm chips. That control also underpins the economics: tighter ecosystem integration drives engagement with Google's software services, where the real margin lives.
Increased durability addresses one of the clearest adoption barriers in foldables—consumer anxiety over long-term reliability—and could lower churn in a segment where Samsung has held structural market share. Aug. 20 sales figures will indicate whether Google's investment in advanced materials and AI integration moves the needle on revenue.
