DeFiLlama remains the primary free analytics platform for on-chain data, tracking hundreds of billions in total value locked across decentralized finance. Its open-source methodology and public API give analysts direct visibility into protocol activity and capital flows.
The platform monitors over 5,000 protocols across more than 350 distinct blockchain networks, covering DEX volume, protocol fees, capital raises and bridge transaction volume.
DeFiLlama reports approximately $310 billion in stablecoin supply across all tracked chains, making it a key reference point for mapping the liquidity and distribution of dollar-pegged assets on-chain.
TVL is calculated by summing token balances held within a protocol's smart contracts. DeFiLlama's open-source adapters identify those contracts, read balances via JSON-RPC, then multiply by USD prices from its internal price service.
Adapter code for each protocol is publicly available in the DeFiLlama-Adapters GitHub repository, allowing anyone to audit the exact aggregation and validation logic.
Listing a new protocol requires submitting a pull request to the adapters repository. After maintainers review and merge the submission, new listings typically appear on the front-end within 24 hours.
The methodology handles specific edge cases: liquid staking tokens such as stETH are deduplicated to prevent double-counting of underlying assets, and lending protocol TVL excludes borrowed assets to reflect only locked capital.
DeFiLlama runs its own price service, sourcing major token prices from CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap. Thinly traded tokens derive prices from DEX pools, though price discovery for new tokens can lag.
Beyond core TVL and stablecoin tracking, DeFiLlama offers DeFiLlama Yields and DeFiLlama Raises, extending the same open-source model to yield aggregation and fundraising data.
The public API serves billions of requests each month. Major analytics sites, wallet applications and dashboards pull TVL data directly from it, establishing DeFiLlama as the de facto data standard across the ecosystem.
The platform launched in 2021. It requires no login or paywall for general site access, and the public API maintains generous rate limits for normal traffic.
A paid tier, DeFiLlama Pro, is available for $300 per month, targeting API users who need higher request volumes rather than gating core data.
DeFiLlama also developed LlamaZip, a DEX meta-aggregator that routes trades across fragmented liquidity pools. It is optimized for optimistic rollups, helping traders find more efficient execution paths.
