SAN FRANCISCO — Uber Technologies fully divested its stake in Serve Robotics, the autonomous delivery robot company it helped spin out five years ago. The ride-hailing firm disclosed the selloff in a regulatory filing. Serve Robotics learned of the final divestiture upon its official disclosure, according to a source familiar with the events.

Serve Robotics began as Postmates X, the robotics division of Postmates, which Uber acquired for $2.65 billion in 2020. The division spun out as an independent entity in 2021, adopting the name Serve Robotics from its sidewalk delivery bot. Uber initially backed Serve and formed a partnership in 2022, expanding it in May 2023 to deploy up to 2,000 Serve bots onto Uber's app in multiple U.S. markets.

Uber began reducing its stake in Serve Robotics in 2025, according to regulatory filings, before completing the full exit.

Serve Robotics co-founder and CEO Ali Kashani addressed the shifting relationship during the company's second-quarter earnings call on Aug. 6. Kashani said delivery volume through Uber reversed in the second quarter, the first decline after 17 consecutive quarters of growth from the first quarter of 2022 through the first quarter of this year.

Kashani attributed the reversal to lower-than-expected robot utilization and said the two companies held differing views on the operational model required to scale their shared autonomous fleet, specifically citing fleet coordination and merchant integration.

Given those disagreements, Serve does not expect to renew its partnership agreement with Uber when it expires in early 2027.

Serve Robotics pointed to alternative growth during the same period. Deliveries with another food delivery partner grew nearly 50 percent in a single quarter, suggesting the company can scale commercial relationships beyond Uber.

Uber's exit aligns with its broader strategy of spreading exposure across autonomous vehicle technology companies. The ride-hailing firm has partnered with or invested in more than 30 such companies over the past several years, allowing it to engage across the sector without concentrating capital in any single provider.

For Serve Robotics, losing Uber's backing means scaling its autonomous delivery network without support from its former parent. The economics of last-mile robot delivery demand high utilization rates to offset hardware capital expenditures and ongoing deployment and maintenance costs. Serve must now demonstrate consistent unit profitability across multiple partners.

The competitive moat for autonomous delivery robot companies depends on efficient route optimization, regulatory navigation and hardware reliability at scale. Serve's delivery growth with other partners indicates its technology and operations carry independent value. Securing new capital for expansion remains the near-term test.

Uber's decision reflects a capital allocation choice, redirecting investment toward other strategic priorities. Its exit from Serve suggests the company intends to participate in autonomous delivery through partnerships rather than direct equity stakes.
