GUANGZHOU, China — Honor unveiled its Robot Phone in Guangzhou, featuring a robotic arm that deploys a three-axis gimbal camera from the device's rear chassis. The design integrates physical AI capabilities directly into a consumer smartphone, powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip.
Honor CEO James Li said at the launch event that not every phone should be "just another black slab" in the AI era.
The device's primary competitive moat lies in its hardware integration. Unlike standard camera bumps, the Robot Phone's module slides open to reveal a camera system on a robotic arm, effectively building an action camera into a flagship Android phone.
Beyond the camera, the phone incorporates the Yoyo AI voice assistant, which handles tasks like ordering items through apps — drawing on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip for both digital and physical AI functions.
The launch follows a development timeline that included teasing the concept last year, showing a mockup at CES in January and providing an early working demo at MWC in February, despite early skepticism over the design's commercial viability.
Honor's investment in the technology aligns with its broader robotics strategy, which includes development of a humanoid robot — a capital allocation signal that the company is betting on embodied AI as a durable moat rather than a marketing stunt.
The Robot Phone will go on sale in China imminently. It features a 6.3-inch OLED screen and is available in silver and grey finishes, targeting the premium Android segment.
The launch puts pressure on other Android manufacturers to respond. A smartphone market that has spent years competing on incrementally better sensors and thinner bezels now has a device that redefines what the chassis itself can do — and Honor is first to market with a shipping product rather than a concept render.
