Strategy now holds $4.75 billion in cash—enough to cover roughly 2.7 years of dividend payments. That reserve is a direct response to preferred stock investors demanding real liquidity, not a promise that Bitcoin's price will bail them out.
The company originally assumed investors would lean into Bitcoin's built-in liquidity and long-term appreciation. They were wrong. Institutions and short-duration capital managers wanted cash on hand, and Strategy adjusted. That re-evaluation drove the development of new financial products.
Chief Executive Officer Phong Le confirmed the shift. Strategy is no longer just accumulating Bitcoin—it is building a digital credit business around it. Le wants the company to become the "JPMorgan of digital finance," serving as what he called Bitcoin's "central bank" and running an ecosystem where other businesses build financial services on top of Strategy's products. He also said decentralized finance could be integrated to push more capital into Bitcoin. Le made those comments in an interview published Aug. 10.
Le compared the planned ecosystem to Apple's iPhone model—Strategy builds the base layer, others build on top.
To reduce volatility exposure for risk-averse investors, Strategy launched new preferred stock products, including STRC, offering Bitcoin-linked returns alongside its core holdings. Le was direct: those products have to work for the broader Bitcoin strategy to hold together.
Strategy currently holds approximately 840,000 BTC—about 4 percent of Bitcoin's hard-capped supply of 21 million coins. At that scale, every capital allocation decision Strategy makes moves the market. Le acknowledged the scrutiny that comes with that position.
The company's legacy software business is still running. Software revenue rose 7 percent year over year; cloud subscriptions climbed 54 percent. That segment remains part of the overall operation, even as Bitcoin dominates Strategy's market value.
Approximately 1,500 employees support Strategy's Bitcoin business across legal, finance, artificial intelligence development and marketing functions.
