SAN FRANCISCO—Spotify announced new policies to manage AI-generated content on its platform, introducing "AI Persona" badges for certain artist profiles starting mid-September to increase transparency about music origin.

A core component of the framework is an updated impersonation policy clarifying how Spotify handles claims related to AI voice clones and unauthorized vocal impersonations. Use of an artist's voice requires explicit authorization.

The company said the measures protect artists from identity exploitation. Spotify is also targeting a specific fraud tactic in which uploaders deliver music—AI-generated or otherwise—to incorrect artist profiles across streaming services, diverting royalties to bad actors.

Spotify is expanding investments to counter fraudulent delivery methods and is testing prevention tactics with major artist distributors. Those partnerships aim to stop such attacks before content reaches the platform.

The company also plans to allocate more resources to its content mismatch review process, cutting response times and giving artists the ability to flag mismatches during the pre-release stage.

The policy changes follow a significant platform cleanup: Spotify removed more than 75 million spammy tracks over the past 12 months as generative AI tools proliferated. The company said unregulated AI content confuses listeners, floods the ecosystem with low-quality music and often attempts to redirect royalties.

Spotify has invested in fighting spam for more than a decade and said it will roll out additional policies frequently as generative AI tools continue to evolve.
