Western Europe is enduring its most severe heatwave on record, a phenomenon scientists attribute directly to the climate crisis. Amplified by fossil fuel burning, the event features high humidity that diminishes the body's natural cooling mechanisms.

Almost half of Europe's 850 largest cities—specifically 45 percent of those with populations over 50,000—are experiencing their worst ever heat stress. That condition combines high temperature with elevated humidity, making the human body less efficient at cooling itself through sweating.

The United Kingdom recorded its hottest June temperature ever, reaching 36.7 degrees Celsius (98.06 degrees Fahrenheit) in Somerset. Across western Europe, medical emergencies have risen sharply, and some deaths have occurred.

Dr. Theodore Keeping, an extreme weather research associate at Imperial College London and part of the World Weather Attribution (WWA) team, said, "This is the most severe and widespread heatwave to have ever affected this large a region of Europe. This event would not have been possible in June without climate change."

The WWA analysis quantifies the escalation. A heatwave of the current magnitude would have been 2 degrees Celsius cooler in 2003 and 3.5 degrees Celsius cooler in 1976. The planet has warmed by 1.1 degrees Celsius over the last 50 years, significantly altering the probability of such events.

Night-time temperatures, which disrupt sleep and recovery, are approximately 100 times more likely today compared to 2003. Many European capital cities are recording their hottest three-day periods not just for June but for any time of year.

Europe, identified as the world's fastest-warming continent, has experienced 23 of the 30 most severe heatwaves recorded since 1950 in the period since 2000—warming at more than twice the global average.

A fifth major heat wave of the year is sweeping across an already parched continent, raising wildfire risks, threatening crop yields and drying watersheds feeding the Rhine, Po and Danube rivers.

Record low water levels in those rivers have already disrupted navigation and power production. The persistent heat is expected to block moisture-bearing clouds, preventing critically low rivers from refilling and worsening water scarcity.

The economic toll is direct. The heat wave is crippling shipping, energy, farming and tourism, driving up prices across the continent. Schools have closed, hospitals are under strain, and rail and air journeys face cancellations.

The WWA scientists used wet bulb globe temperatures to quantify the compounded impact of humidity—a metric that directly assesses the human body's ability to cool itself. Keeping said, "The health impacts of this heatwave are likely to be extremely high. The speed of change is startling."

Full statistical analysis of the current event's impact will take time. The 2022 summer heatwave in Europe resulted in over 60,000 heat-related deaths. Scientists warn that without urgent climate action, future heat conditions will become more extreme, making current summers seem relatively cool by comparison.
