SAN FRANCISCO — Decentralized social network Bluesky saw its mobile app monthly active users fall to 10.4 million worldwide in June 2026, a 27.2 percent decline from the previous year, according to digital intelligence provider Similarweb. Mobile daily active users also decreased, falling 25.6 percent year-over-year in July to approximately 3 million.
The decline follows a surge in late 2024 when users migrated from X after the U.S. elections. Despite continued growth in registered accounts, fewer people use the app regularly—a sign that post-election momentum did not translate into sustained engagement for a large share of its new users.
Bluesky's app usage has more than halved from its peak. Quarterly average MAU stood at 22.1 million in the fourth quarter of 2024, falling to 10.7 million in the second quarter of 2026, a drop of roughly 52 percent.
For Bluesky CEO Toni Schneider, those figures may not be the primary concern. The company is working to advance its underlying AT Protocol to power a range of social applications, services and communities—a strategy that extends well beyond growing the Bluesky app itself.
The AT Protocol is gaining traction through other projects. Apps including BlackSky and Eurosky are growing, and the video-focused Skylight has found early adoption, pointing to real development activity across the broader ecosystem.
Bluesky has also launched new products to diversify its business. These include Attie, an AI-powered research tool. The company is building support for private data, which could draw users seeking private networking and community functions rather than public interaction.
Despite the user decline, Bluesky retains an engaged core. Its stickiness rate—the ratio of daily to monthly active users—was roughly 29 percent in June, comparable to Threads, suggesting consistent use among those who stayed.
Bluesky's user drop does not appear to track a return to X. X's worldwide mobile MAU declined approximately 3 percent year-over-year in June, and its mobile DAU fell 7 percent in July to 123.7 million.
X remains a large platform, reporting 302 million monthly active users on its mobile app in June 2026. Web visits rose 5.3 percent year-over-year in July to 4.7 billion.
Threads has moved in the opposite direction. Meta said Threads reached 500 million monthly active users in June 2026. Similarweb estimated Threads had 141.5 million mobile DAU in Jan. 2026, surpassing X on mobile globally.
Threads holds a DAU-to-MAU ratio between 30 percent and 37 percent. X users spend more time on the platform, averaging 31 minutes per day versus Threads' eight minutes, reflecting different engagement models across the competitive set.
Bluesky's business model depends on broad adoption of the AT Protocol. Its ability to monetize that underlying technology—rather than the user count of its flagship app—will determine whether the protocol pivot holds up commercially.
