SAN FRANCISCO — Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms, published a 6,500-word essay outlining his vision for a positive AI future, pushing back directly against growing public skepticism about the technology's economic and social costs.

The essay confronts what Zuckerberg calls the "doom" narrative in AI discourse. "It is surprising that the discourse from many developing AI is so filled with doom," he said. "I do not understand why anyone who believes that AI will eliminate most jobs and much of humanity's relevance would rush to build that future."

Other industry leaders are less sanguine. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has said AI may cause "unusually painful" job losses across multiple sectors. The debate over AI's labor-market impact has grown sharp enough to turn personal: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's residence was targeted by a Molotov cocktail and later by gunfire.

Zuckerberg's optimism carries a price tag. The essay describes Meta building dedicated power sources for some future data centers—a capital commitment that reflects how compute-hungry its AI ambitions have become. Electricity consumption at that scale is a recurring flashpoint in public criticism of the industry.

The essay also addresses AI's effect on social behavior, an area with direct revenue implications for Meta. AI chatbots now offer interactions that are low-effort and highly personalized, a dynamic that critics say produces hollow digital relationships. For a company whose advertising business depends on genuine user engagement, that is not a theoretical concern. If AI-mediated interactions displace authentic social behavior, the quality of Meta's engagement data—and the attention it can sell to advertisers—could erode.

Zuckerberg frames AI governance around "preventing government tyranny," language that signals Meta's intent to shape regulatory outcomes before restrictive legislation can raise compliance costs or constrain its development roadmap.

The essay also serves a talent function. Top AI researchers have options; a company that controls the public narrative around beneficial AI has a recruiting advantage over rivals that do not.

Meta Platforms stock (META) closed at $594.92, up 0.5 percent.
