MADRID, Aug. 10—A wildfire in Spain's southwestern Huelva province has burned approximately 4,000 hectares, with firefighters struggling against unpredictable wind patterns. The fire originated near the town of Niebla, about 70 kilometers from the Portuguese border.

Strong gusts reaching 40 to 50 kilometers per hour have fueled the blaze. Shifting wind directions complicate the strategic deployment of firefighting resources, regional emergency management official Antonio Sanz said.

Sanz said the fire's constant changes in wind direction are disrupting the attack strategy. Firefighters are waiting for a brief window of calmer conditions before winds are expected to intensify again later in the day.

More than 275 firefighters are deployed to combat the fire, including 60 members of Spain's Military Emergency Unit (UME). The operation is backed by 24 aircraft and 94 ground vehicles. Andalusian authorities have elevated the incident to operational Situation 2, indicating increased severity due to persistent winds.

Authorities have ordered the precautionary evacuation of about 70 people from areas near the fire. Most did not require placement in public shelters.

No residential areas have been directly affected. Two local roads, the A-493 and HU-3106, remain closed to traffic.

The Huelva blaze is one of several to hit Spain since summer began. A wildfire in Ávila province burned approximately 50,000 hectares in late July, and another in Almería province killed 14 people in early August.

The increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires across Europe are linked to heatwaves and drought. Meteorologists note that large fires can generate their own microclimates, creating unpredictable convective phenomena. Such blazes can produce sudden violent wind gusts, known as downbursts. Specialists from the Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (Aemet) said the Ávila fire exhibited characteristics of a sixth-generation wildfire, complicating prediction and firefighting efforts.

Fire crews remain focused on exploiting any favorable weather changes to establish control lines. The immediate concern is an expected deterioration of wind conditions later in the day.
