The New York Stock Exchange is building an onchain settlement platform for tokenized securities. NYSE President Lynn Martin confirmed the exchange's participation in the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation's (DTCC) tokenization pilot program this July.
Martin said the NYSE will continue to explore how blockchain technology can serve as core infrastructure for global financial markets, describing the initiative as a bridge between traditional finance and decentralized finance.
The NYSE outlined a plan in January for 24/7 onchain trading and settlement of U.S. equities and exchange-traded funds. The platform is designed to support fractional shares, instant settlement and stablecoin-based funding.
The January plan also detailed backing for tokenized deposits from BNY and Citi across clearinghouses operated by Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), NYSE's parent company.
The NYSE has also expanded its tokenization capabilities through a partnership with Securitize, which now acts as the exchange's first digital transfer agent, converting traditional stocks and ETFs into blockchain-based tokens while preserving full shareholder rights.
DTCC plans a full October launch for its tokenization platform, covering Russell 1000 stocks, major ETFs and key U.S. Treasury instruments. DTCC calls it the largest production tokenization effort the clearinghouse has attempted to date.
The pilot has moved beyond the planning stage. DTCC moved tokenized stocks, ETFs and Treasurys into live trading, with more than 50 firms contributing input, including BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Anchorage and Circle.
The SEC approved NYSE's rules for tokenized equities in April, aligning the exchange with broader industry moves toward blockchain integration in traditional markets.
ICE, NYSE's parent, invested in crypto exchange OKX at a $25 billion valuation. Plans include allowing OKX users to trade tokenized stocks and derivatives tied to NYSE-listed assets later in 2026.
Crypto exchange Bullish, trading under the ticker BLSH, announced a $4.2 billion deal in May to acquire transfer agent Equiniti, connecting Bullish's digital-asset business with traditional shareholder record-keeping.
Securitize began trading on the NYSE under the ticker SECZ in July, following a $400 million SPAC deal that placed the tokenization firm on the same exchange it helps bring onchain.
