PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 on Friday night on Ryan Waldschmidt's two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning at Chase Field.
Waldschmidt's game-winning blast — his second career home run and first major league walk-off hit — came against Dodgers closer Edwin Díaz with one out and a runner on first.
The ninth-inning rally began when Max Kepler drew a walk. Jorge Barrosa entered as a pinch-runner, and Tim Tawa struck out before Waldschmidt delivered the homer.
Arizona had built a 2-0 lead through five innings behind Merrill Kelly, who held Los Angeles hitless over that span. In the third inning, right fielder Corbin Carroll leaped at the wall to rob Tommy Edman of a potential home run, keeping Kelly's no-hit bid intact.
Kelly exited in the sixth with a right leg cramp. The Dodgers scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game at 2-2, then took a 3-2 lead in the eighth when Andy Pages hit a solo home run to open the frame.
Waldschmidt erased that lead with one swing. Walk-off wins against the Dodgers — a division rival with championship expectations — carry weight, and Arizona delivered when it had to.
