FREETOWN, Sierra Leone — Global coffee supplies face a growing threat from rising temperatures and shifting climate patterns, pushing scientists to explore a resilient wild species from West Africa as a tool to secure the future of one of the world's most consumed crops.

Arabica coffee accounts for 70 percent of global production and is the primary source of specialty coffee. It thrives only in cooler highland environments and tolerates a narrow temperature range.

Rising temperatures, prolonged droughts and increasing pest infestations are shrinking suitable growing areas, cutting yields and degrading bean quality. As historical growing regions warm, farmers are moving crops to higher elevations — a strategy with limits. There is a ceiling to how high coffee can be cultivated before terrain becomes unsuitable.

Coffea stenophylla, a wild species native to West Africa, can endure mean annual temperatures up to six or seven degrees Celsius higher than Arabica, according to researchers. That heat tolerance makes it a key resource for geneticists and plant breeders seeking to develop more durable commercial varieties.

Critically, stenophylla produces a cup quality comparable to Arabica — a distinction that sets it apart from Robusta, the hardier variety that dominates lower-elevation farming but delivers a less complex, often bitter flavor. The specialty coffee industry, where flavor and aroma drive value, has little use for climate resilience that comes at the cost of taste.

Scientists are working to crossbreed stenophylla with Arabica, aiming to transfer heat-tolerant traits into commercially grown plants. Researchers describe the work as a critical step in adapting one of the world's most valuable cash crops to a warming climate.

Widespread cultivation of stenophylla plants — directly or through hybrid offspring — could help stabilize coffee production for decades and support agricultural economies across producing nations, researchers say.
