LONDON — Lottery players across the globe have defied statistical improbability in recent months, with multiple jackpot winners and fortunes found in unlikely circumstances.
A Welsh couple achieved a rare second lottery win, overcoming odds estimated at 24 trillion-to-1. The pair first won £1 million (approximately $1.3 million) in June 2018 through the EuroMillions Millionaire Maker game. They continued buying tickets afterward and eventually hit another jackpot.
In Florida, James Bozeman Jr. won the Lotto twice, both times purchasing his winning tickets from the same 7-Eleven store. His two wins combined for a $13 million cash prize.
A couple in Virginia won the lottery three times within a single month, a rare occurrence in the history of lottery games.
Fortunes also emerged from forgotten tickets. A self-employed builder in the United Kingdom found an unclaimed EuroMillions jackpot ticket worth £76 million among a stockpile of old tickets in his van. His wife and niece had urged him to check his old tickets after lottery operators announced an unclaimed jackpot. The builder described the find as feeling like "some magical Christmas story." The ticket represented the 12th biggest win ever recorded in the U.K.
In Italy, waste workers helped a winner locate a €1 million lottery ticket that had been misplaced. The workers then bought a scratch card themselves, winning €50.
One anonymous lottery winner recounted buying a $48 glass of Pappy Van Winkle 15 whiskey as a first indulgence after their win — only to feel an immediate sense of anticlimax. The winner said the ability to afford such a luxury every night without touching the principal instantly removed the thrill.
