NONTHABURI, Thailand — Seven people died and 15 others were wounded after a teenage gunman opened fire at a school outside Bangkok on Friday. The suspected shooter was among the dead, with killings occurring at his family home and on the school grounds.
Police said the gunman first killed his grandparents at their home before making his way to Debsirin Nonthaburi School on the northern outskirts of the capital.
Lieutenant General Trairong Phophan, a spokesperson for the National Police, confirmed the death toll, including the suspected attacker, and said 15 people were wounded.
An 18-year-old student who witnessed parts of the attack said he initially mistook the gunfire for firecrackers or someone banging an object.
"There were many shots: bang bang bang," the student said. "Then it went quiet. Then it started again."
The shooter was a 14-year-old pupil at the school. Medical teams transported the wounded to nearby hospitals. Their conditions were not immediately released.
Thai police have opened a full investigation into the motive behind the attack, examining what led the teenager to kill family members before turning the weapon on his classmates and teachers.
