NONTHABURI, THAILAND — A 14-year-old suspect killed seven people and wounded more than 30 others at Debsirin Nonthaburi School on Friday, Aug. 7, 2026, then killed himself following the attack.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, speaking to reporters at the scene, said preliminary information indicated the suspect was under stress and had planned the shooting.
The victims included the suspect's grandparents, according to officials.
Anutin said the sequence of events suggested the assault was premeditated. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full scope of the planning involved.
Authorities said the teenager had been experiencing sustained academic pressure, which is being examined as a factor in the events leading up to the shooting.
Anutin expressed grief over the incident. "It should never have happened. How could this happen in our country?" he told reporters.
Emergency services responded rapidly to the scene to manage the casualties and secure the area.
The shooting has prompted a national conversation in Thailand about school safety and mental health support for young people. Government officials are reviewing existing protocols.
Authorities continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses to determine the motivations and precise timeline of the attack.
