EDINBURGH, Scotland—The Edinburgh Festival Fringe officially began today, Aug. 7, transforming the Scottish capital into a global stage for three weeks. More than 4,200 shows are scheduled across 299 venues throughout the city.
The festival runs until Monday, Aug. 31. Artists and performers from 71 countries are participating in the 2026 program, with shows spanning theater, comedy, music, dance and spoken word.
The Fringe operates on an open-access philosophy—offering anyone a stage and everyone a seat—hosting both established names and emerging artists building their careers.
Edinburgh first promoted its identity as "The Festival City" in 1983, when the Fringe joined forces with the Edinburgh International Festival, the Edinburgh Tattoo and the Film Festival to market the city's cultural offerings.
Performances take place in traditional theaters, temporary spaces and unconventional locations across the city. Comedian and ventriloquist Max Fulham is among the thousands of artists appearing this year.
The influx of artists and audiences generates significant cultural and economic activity for Edinburgh each August, drawing visitors from around the world.
