LAS VEGAS — The murder trial in the 1996 killing of Tupac Shakur opens Monday with jury selection in a Las Vegas courtroom. Duane "Keffe D" Davis, 63, faces charges for orchestrating the drive-by shooting that killed the music star.
Prosecutors allege Davis directed the fatal shooting. Davis, identified by law enforcement as a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips street gang, was charged with murder with a deadly weapon in September 2023, following decades of speculation and a renewed investigation.
Shakur was shot in Las Vegas on Sept. 7, 1996. He was 25.
The case has moved through three years of litigation and appeals since charges were brought. The upcoming proceedings will present evidence to a jury for the first time in the killing.
Prosecutors will aim to establish Davis's role in planning the shooting, according to court filings. Jury selection will precede opening statements; the panel selected will hear the evidence and decide Davis's fate.
The proceedings will unfold in Clark County District Court.
